Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine teachers’ views on humor in educational settings for students with intellectual disabilities. The study addresses humor in terms of perceived humor types, its role in emotional regulation, contributions to the learning process, social and communicative functions, humor-related tools, and individual differences. A qualitative research design was employed, and the participants consisted of 15 teachers working with students diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that students with intellectual disabilities tend to perceive concrete, visual, and physical forms of humor more easily, while experiencing difficulties in understanding abstract humor. Teachers reported that humor generally contributes to positive emotional responses, increased attention and focus, smoother learning processes, and enhanced social interaction. However, the effectiveness of humor was found to vary depending on individual characteristics such as students’ cognitive level and language and communication skills. Overall, the results suggest that humor can function as a supportive instructional tool in special education settings when it is used intentionally, appropriately, and with sensitivity to individual differences.
