Abstract

Cotton is one of the most important agricultural commodities due to its role in the textile industry, rural employment, and agricultural income. This study aims to analyze the economic and structural dynamics of cotton production at both global and national levels and to evaluate Türkiye’s position in terms of production, cost structure, foreign trade, and support policies. The study is based on statistical data published by the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC), the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), and other official institutions. A descriptive and comparative analysis approach was used, and time-series data covering the period 2000/2001–2022/2023 were examined. The data show that global cotton production has remained around 24–25 million tons, while cultivated areas remained relatively stable and production growth was mainly driven by yield increases. At the same time, high stock-to-use ratios indicate a structural surplus in the global cotton market, influenced by trade policies and government support programs. Cost analysis reveals significant differences among countries in terms of productivity, input use, and competitiveness. In Türkiye, declining cultivation areas and increasing domestic demand have led to a higher dependence on imports despite improvements in yield. The originality of this study lies in the joint evaluation of production, cost, trade, and policy indicators within a single analytical framework. The results indicate that long-term planning, efficient resource use, technological adoption, and stable support policies are essential for ensuring sustainable and competitive cotton production.
