Abstract

Quince (Cydonia oblonga Miller) is one of the fruit crops with high economic value and export potential cultivated in Türkiye. This study was conducted during 2023–2024 to determine the harmful insect species associated with quince orchards and their parasitoids and predators in the provinces of Denizli and İzmir, which are among the leading quince-producing areas of the Aegean Region. In the first year of the study, 47 orchards were surveyed, while 53 orchards were surveyed in the second year. Sampling was carried out between April and November at different phenological stages of quince using visual inspection and beating methods. As a result of the study, a total of 57 pest species belonging to 21 families and five orders were identified in quince orchards. Among the identified pest species, Cydia pomonella (Linnaeus) was determined to be the key pest of quince, while Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) (Diptera: Tephritidae) was identified as the second most important harmful species. Both species were recorded in all surveyed districts. The most common aphid species (Aphis pomi de Geer, Aphis gossypii Glover, Brachycaudus (Acaudus) cardui (Linnaeus), and Rhopalosiphum padi (Linnaeus) were observed from mid-April to late May and from late August to October; however, their populations remained at very low levels. The occurrence of Pseudococcus comstocki (Kuwana) (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) on quince represents the first record of this species on quince in Türkiye. A total of 21 predator species belonging to 12 families and six orders, and two parasitoid species, were obtained from quince trees. The diversity and abundance of predator and parasitoid species in quince orchards were found to be very low. Among the predators, the family Coccinellidae exhibited the highest species richness and abundance. The parasitoids of C. pomonella, Ascogaster quadridentata Wesmael (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Itoplectis alternans (Gravenhorst) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) were detected.
