Abstract

English Version Abstract of The Manuscript Objective: The incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC) tends to increase with increment exposure to potential environmental risk factors. In this study, it was aimed to investigate whether this increase in incidence causes differences in clinical presentation. Methods: This is a retrospective, hospital-based study. Between August 2017 and September 2019, newly diagnosed adult UC patients were included in the study. Results: 99 patients with UC were included in the study; male to female ratio was found to be 1.54. When the average age is examined by gender; The mean age was 45.67 (SD ± 17.02) in males and 37.67 (SD±12.47) in females. The difference was statistically significant (p=0.01; p <0.05). 30-39 age group was found to be the most common age range (30.3%). While the frequency of involvement by gender was almost the same for 3 regions in men (33.9% pancolitis, 33.9% left colitis, 32.2% distal colitis), it was found that left side involvement was significantly lower in women (42.4% pancolitis, 18.2% left colitis, 39.4% distal colitis). This difference between the sexes was statistically insignificant. At the time of admission, the endoscopic activity index was notably higher in men than in women. This difference was statistically significant (median 3 and 2, respectively; min 0 max 3; p=0.01, p <0.05). Conclusion: Our study revealed that this disease is more common in men, both at an older age and more severely. Nevertheless, large-scale, community-based studies are needed to reach a final judgement.
