Abstract

Objective: To examine the desires, perspectives, knowledge levels, attitudes, and expectations of hemodialysis patients regarding kidney transplantation. Methods: The study was conducted using a descriptive qualitative design with semi-structured in-depth individual interviews. The study was carried out at the Hemodialysis Unit of Kocaeli Sehir Hospital between July 2025 and January 2026. Twenty-one patients aged 18 and over, who had been receiving HD treatment for at least three months, were able to speak Turkish, and voluntarily agreed to participate were included in the study. Data were collected using a personal information form, an information form regarding the disease and kidney transplantation, and a semi-structured interview form. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and evaluated using thematic analysis by two researchers using the MAXQDA program. Results: Five main themes were identified as a result of the analysis: disease and dialysis experience, attitudes and perceptions towards organ transplantation, obstacles in the organ transplantation process, religious-cultural-social perspectives, and expectations and recommendations regarding transplantation. Participants associated the dialysis process with physical fatigue, loss of social role, and feelings of dependence, while describing kidney transplantation as an opportunity to return to a freer and more normal life. However, surgical risks, fear of organ rejection, donor shortage, and uncertainties regarding waiting lists emerged as significant sources of anxiety. Family support, religious beliefs, and societal perceptions were among the key factors influencing the transplantation decision. Conclusion: The experiences of hemodialysis patients regarding kidney transplantation exhibit a multidimensional structure. Considering psychosocial, cultural, and belief-based factors in the transplantation process is important for developing patient-centered, holistic, and individualized care approaches.

Bulgular: Hastaların 35’i (%62,5) erkek, 21’i (%37,5) kadın olup, yaş ortalaması 49,3 (22-72), medyan yaş 54’tü.
