Abstract

The incidence of child neglect and abuse and its reflections on official institutions can be affected by extraordinary life events experienced by societies. In our study, we aimed to investigate how child neglect and abuse cases diagnosed in a university hospital were affected by the pandemic process. The files of 139 children who were reported to the Child Welfare Acency for neglect and abuse as a result of direct applications and who were consulted applications to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic were retrospectively analyzed. Notifications made during the pandemic period were higher than those made before the pandemic (p<0.05). The rates of school dropout, alcohol use, substance abuse, being dragged into crime, sexual abuse and attempted suicide were higher in the reported cases compared to the pre-pandemic period (p<0.05). While being sexually abused was higher in girls, the rate of being dragged into crime and receiving a mental diagnosis was higher in boys (p<0.05). The rate of receiving a diagnosis was higher in cases with broken families compared to those with nuclear families (p<0.05). Those who received a mental diagnosis had a higher rate of having a cautionary decision taken against them compared to those who did not receive a diagnosis (p<0.05). The number of cautionary decisions taken for those with a mental diagnosis was higher than those without a diagnosis (p<0.05). The findings of our study support that there is an increase in children's risky behaviors and neglect and abuse against children during the pandemic period.
