Abstract

Objective: The aim is to examine the relationship between parental emotional availability and negative life events in adolescents who present with a suicide attempt to the child and adolescent mental health clinic. Additionally, the study aims to elucidate the mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties in this relationship. Methods: Within the last month, 31 adolescents aged 12-18 with a history of suicide attempts and 31 healthy adolescents of the same age were included in the study. The Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale was administered to the adolescents. The adolescents were also asked to fill out a socio-demographic data form, the Emotion Regulation Difficulty Scale, and the Parental Emotional Availability Scale. Results: Adolescents who have attempted suicide were found to have parents with lower educational levels compared to the control group, and maternal physical illness was more prevalent in this group. These adolescents also exhibited greater difficulties in emotion regulation, while their parents demonstrated lower emotional availability. The findings indicate that parental emotional availability influences the risk of suicide attempts through adolescents’ emotion regulation difficulties. Conclusion: Reducing the risk of suicidal behavior involves addressing adverse experiences from childhood in appropriate contexts and planning preventive, timely interventions for adolescents at risk. Additionally, providing parental and psychosocial support early on, recognizing difficulties in emotion regulation, and encouraging healthier emotion regulation strategies can be beneficial.
