Abstract

In this study, the photochemical responses of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. Aitana) plants under moderate and severe high temperature stress (45°C and 55°C, 4 hours) at the early seedling stage were investigated using the chlorophyll a fluorescence technique and the JIP test. The results showed severe heat stress had a more pronounced inhibitory effect on photosynthetic electron transport reactions in sunflower cotyledons than moderate heat stress. The increase in Fo parameter and the decrease in Fm, Fv/Fo, Fv/Fm, φo, and φo/(1-φo) parameters caused by severe heat stress revealed that primary photochemical reactions in sunflower cotyledons were significantly inhibited. In addition, the increase observed in the ∆V/∆to and TRo/RC parameters indicated that severe heat stress significantly inhibited the oxidation ability of the reaction centers in photosystem II units but elevated the amount of the trapped light energy in sunflower cotyledons. Increased φDo and DIo/RC parameters in sunflower cotyledons under severe heat stress prove that the trapped light energy cannot be used in electron transport reactions and is dissipated as heat. Severe heat stress resulted in insufficient reduction of the plastoquinone pool in sunflower cotyledons, as indicated by the decrease in the parameter area. As a result, it could be concluded that severe heat stress almost completely inhibits photosynthetic activity in sunflower cotyledons by adversely affecting light absorption, the transport of absorbed light energy to the reaction centers of photosystem II units, and the delivery of electrons to photosystem I units.
