Abstract
A significant pest of beans, Acanthoscelides obtectus Say (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), is widely distributed and causes considerable economic losses in dry beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) worldwide. In this study, the repellent and toxic effects of the essential oils of clove (Eugenia caryophyllata), ginger (Zingiber officinalis), and anise (Illicium verum) were evaluated against the bean weevil A. obtectus, a major pest of stored dry beans. All experiments and insect colony maintenance were conducted in climate chambers at 25±1°C and 60±5% relative humidity. The repellent effects of the essential oils were tested at a dose of 25,000 ppm L⁻¹, and repellent indices were calculated. The repellent indices were 71.96, 52.83, and 25.76 for clove, ginger, and anise oils, respectively. In addition to repellency, the oils also exhibited toxic effects on the pest. Mortality rates of A. obtectus increased with increasing doses of the essential oils. Lethal concentrations (LC₃₀, LC₄₀, LC₅₀, and LC₉₀) were determined based on mortality data. Among the tested oils, E. caryophyllata showed the highest toxicity, with lower lethal concentration values than the other two oils. Overall, the results indicate that these essential oils have potential for the management of A. obtectus. However, further studies under different conditions and application strategies are needed to enhance their practical use in pest control.
