Abstract

Corn fiber, a significant byproduct of the wet milling industry, requires efficient drying to balance energy consumption and product quality. This study evaluated the effects of HSW (heavy steepwater) flow rates (1.00, 1.50, and 2.00 m³ h⁻¹) and recycle frequency (25 and 35 Hz) on the protein, moisture, and starch contents of corn fiber dried in an industrial rotary tube bundle dryer. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that HSW flow rate had a statistically significant effect on protein content (p<0.05), whereas moisture and starch contents were unaffected by HSW flow rate and recycle frequency (p>0.05). Tukey’s HSD test showed that protein content differed significantly between 1.00 m³ h⁻¹ and both 1.50 and 2.00 m³ h⁻¹, whereas no significant difference was observed between 1.50 and 2.00 m³ h⁻¹. Recycle frequency had no significant effect on any of the analyzed responses. Regression models predicted protein, moisture, and starch contents of 16.179%, 12.702%, and 17.594% w/w, respectively, at an HSW flow rate of 1.86 m³ h⁻¹ and a recycle frequency of 31 Hz. This condition met the factory moisture and starch targets but did not meet the minimum protein target of 18% w/w. The findings indicate that protein content may benefit modestly from calibrated increases in HSW flow rate, while broader quality improvements will require investigation of additional process parameters such as thermal profiles and residence time. Overall, the study identifies the selective role of HSW flow rate in protein content and highlights additional variables that should be considered to improve industrial-scale corn fiber drying.
