Abstract

Objective: Changes in sleep duration have been reported to be associated with weight gain. The aim of this study was to assess sleep quality in children with obesity and to investigate the relationship between sleep quality and daily lifestyle activities. Material and Methods: This prospective cross-sectional study included a total of 402 children aged 6–10 years, comprising 201 obese and 201 normal-weight children, who were referred to the Paediatric Endocrinology Clinic between July 2024 and October 2024. Sleep quality was measured using the Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) in both the obese and control groups. Sociodemographic data, including daily screen time, caffeine consumption, academic performance and weekly exercise duration, were recorded. Results: Obese children had a sleep-time resistance score of 7.80±2.10, which was significantly higher than that of the control group (p<0.01). Delayed sleep onset was more common in obese children than in children of normal weight (p<0.01). The daytime sleepiness score was 7.58±2.01 in obese children and was higher than in the control group. A significant positive correlation was found between increased screen time and sleep resistance, daytime sleepiness and nighttime awakenings (p<0.05). The total CSHQ score was 38.34±5.34 and was significantly higher in obese children (p<0.01). Conclusion: Sleep quality was significantly impaired in obese children, and increased screen time negatively affected sleep habits. Lifestyle changes, such as reducing screen time and increasing physical activity, may help prevent obesity and promote healthy sleep in children.
