Abstract

ABSTRACT Objective: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely prescribed for both prophylactic and therapeutic purposes; however, their fre quent use in the community and potential long-term adverse effects have raised concerns. This study aimed to evaluate patterns of PPI prescribing and use among physicians and the general population, with an emphasis on awareness of potential risks and the rationale for use. Materials and Methods: This face-to-face, cross-sectional survey study used two separate 10-item questionnaires: one for physicians and one for members of the public. A total of 120 physicians and 310 members of the public participated in the surveys. Results: Lansoprazole was the most frequently prescribed PPI (54.2%). PPI use was significantly more common in the working-age population than in other age groups (p=0.002). Among respondents, 50.3% reported having no knowledge of the potential adverse effects of PPIs. Overall, 31.6% of the public and 21.7% of physicians believed that PPIs were overused. Inappropriate medication use was identified in 54.5% of participants. Although 41.7% of physicians stated that they generally informed their patients about the duration of treatment, only 16.7% reported providing information about the potential adverse effects of long-term use. Conclusion: Our study indicates that inappropriate PPI use is highly prevalent in the study population and is inconsistent with the principles of rational drug use. Public awareness of the risks associated with inappropriate use should be increased through structured information campaigns delivered via social media platforms and public service announcements. Keywords: Drug-related side effects, Adverse reactions, drug utilization, proton pump inhibitors, physicians' practice patterns.
