Abstract

Climate change is one of the greatest global threats of the 21st century due to its profound impacts on health. Türkiye's Climate Law, which aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2053, proposes numerous policies to combat climate change. The aim of this study is to assess the potential health impacts of Türkiye's current Climate Law and to develop policy recommendations for a new climate law that may be drafted in the future. The two main research questions of the study are: “What potential health impacts does Türkiye's Climate Law have?” and “What policy recommendations should be made regarding how a health perspective should be incorporated into a new climate law that may be drafted in Türkiye?” A qualitative approach was adopted in the study using document analysis. The Climate Law, as a legal and political document, constitutes the fundamental unit of the assessment. 6 themes, 19 categories, and 39 codes were derived from the study findings to systematically present the relationship between the Climate Law and health. Although the law does not directly reference the health system or health services, it provides a multidimensional policy framework that can contribute to the protection of health with its regulations aimed at improving social equality, environmental protection, risk management and the information capacity of society. A holistic health perspective should be incorporated into any future new climate law.
