Abstract

During the period extending from the final decades of the Ottoman Empire to the era of the British Mandate, Palestine witnessed a vibrant intellectual milieu in which literary production, historiography, and press activities manifested with increasing intensity under the influence of the Nahda movement. While the expansion of educational opportunities, the proliferation of print culture, and the intensification of scholarly circulation constituted the primary dynamics of this vitality, the principal factor shaping the trajectory of this process in the Palestinian context was the political, demographic, and cultural threat perception generated by Zionism. This perception of threat significantly reinforced a historical, cultural, and literary orientation among Palestinian intellectuals, particularly during the British Mandate period. Within this framework, texts structured around the history of Palestine, sacred sites, waqf institutions, and manuscript culture acquired the character of a conscious intellectual endeavor aimed at preserving national and cultural values. In this context, the present study aims to examine the position of Abdullah Mukhlis—an Ottoman intellectual of Gaziantep origin—in the preservation of Palestine’s historical and cultural heritage, with particular focus on manuscripts, libraries, and waqf institutions. The point of departure of this study lies in the observation that, despite Mukhlis’s multifaceted contributions to historiography, manuscript culture, librarianship, and waqf administration, his intellectual persona has received limited and fragmented attention in the existing literature. Accordingly, the study addresses the relationship between Mukhlis’s familial and educational background, his professional experience within the Ottoman provincial bureaucracy, and his scholarly production within a holistic analytical framework. His intellectual activities—shaped through authorship, critical editing, translation, and journalistic writings—are examined from the perspective of manuscript culture and institutional memory. In this regard, his approach to the identification, classification, and publication of manuscripts; his conceptualization of libraries as institutional structures ensuring the continuity of scholarly production; and his treatment of waqf institutions as the legal and institutional foundations of historical continuity constitute the principal axes of analysis. Furthermore, the study evaluates Mukhlis’s relations with contemporary scholarly circles, his contributions to periodicals, and his text-centered critical methodology, thereby situating him within a broader intellectual network extending from Palestine to major centers of learning such as Damascus, Cairo, and Beirut. In this respect, the study approaches Mukhlis as an intellectual actor who constructs the relationship between text, institution, and cultural memory. Methodologically, the study employs a combination of biographical analysis and intellectual history, drawing on archival documents, periodicals, critical editions, memoirs, and contemporary assessments, all subjected to a comparative and text-centered reading. Nevertheless, the loss of a significant portion of Mukhlis’s works, the disappearance of his personal library under wartime conditions, and the dispersed nature of his writings constitute the principal limitations of the study. In conclusion, the study demonstrates that Mukhlis developed a systematic intellectual effort aimed at preserving the historical continuity of Palestine and its Arab-Islamic cultural memory through manuscripts, libraries, and waqf institutions, and that this effort should be understood as a conscious approach to heritage preservation shaped by the political and cultural conditions of the period.
