Abstract
This study analyzes the economic and socio-demographic determinants of private secondary school enrollment ratios across provinces in Turkey. Covering the 2010–2020 period, the panel data set is compiled from the Ministry of National Education, TURKSTAT (Turkish Statistical Institute), and İŞKUR statistics. The dependent variable is the share of students enrolled in private secondary schools, while independent variables include per-capita income, female labor-force participation, female schooling rate, average household size, agricultural size, education support policy, the closure of private teaching institution, and metropolitan status. The analysis employs fixed-effects models and Driscoll–Kraay standard-error corrected fixed effects. Results reveal that per-capita income, female schooling rate, household size, metropolitan status, education support, and the closure of private teaching institution have a positively significant relationship with private school enrollment rates, whereas female labor participation and agricultural share are statistically insignificant. These findings indicate that rising income levels and policy interventions encourage private schooling, while urbanization enhances accessibility and diversity of educational opportunities. The study provides implications for policies aimed at balancing public and private education and promoting equity in educational access.
