Abstract

Abstract The tourism sector has a very important place in the globalized world on macroeconomic indicators of countries such as economic growth, closing current account deficits and providing employment. This sector, which has come to the forefront in recent times with its significant gains without causing environmental pollution, also ensures the spread of local cultures. Each country is in significant competition to attract more tourists and get more foreign currency revenue. For this reason, it is important to determine the factors affecting tourism demand and the preferences of tourists. For this purpose, variables affecting tourist demand for Turkey were analyzed between 1990 and 2017 with vector autoregresive model. In the study, the number of tourists, growth, net exports, inflation variables were used. According to the results of varient separation, the domestic dynamic that affects the number of tourists the most is inflation. Inflation and domestic product also affect the number of tourists the most. A two-way causality relationship has been established between growth and the number of tourists. The literature usually focuses on tourism's contribution to foreign currency return and economic growth. However, the internal dynamics affecting tourism demand are ignored. The main issue important for increasing tourism revenues is the determination of factors that will affect the demands of tourists. If these factors are known, the tourism sector can be developed by creating realistic policies. For this purpose, variables affecting the number of tourists were analyzed and a significant contribution was made to the literature.
