Abstract
In this study, the existing distribution system of a retail company operating in Muğla is examined within the scope of the vehicle routing problem, and the development of more efficient route plans is aimed. The distribution process is addressed within the framework of a single depot capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), and the Clarke Wright savings algorithm and the nearest neighbour search algorithm are applied to solve the problem. Based on real data obtained from the company, the ten-day distribution activities corresponding to October 2025 are analysed in the MATLAB 2015a environment; the generated routes are compared with the current practice in terms of total distance, total distribution cost, and CO₂ emissions. The findings indicate that, when average values are considered, the Clarke Wright savings algorithm reduces the total distance by approximately 22.24%, the total cost by 8.65%, and CO₂ emissions by 22.24% compared with the current system. The study demonstrates that classical heuristic methods can be effectively used as decision support tools based on real operational data and that incorporating environmental indicators into route evaluation provides a meaningful contribution to practice.
