Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the applicability of the H3A-4 multi-extraction method for the determination of macro- and micronutrients in paddy soils of the Thrace Region and to investigate its relationship with conventional soil extraction methods. Soil samples collected from rice-growing areas in Edirne, Kırklareli, and Istanbul provinces were analyzed for soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), texture, and plant-available nutrient contents. The investigated macronutrients included phosphorus (P), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg), while iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and boron (B) were evaluated as micronutrients. Conventional extraction methods included Olsen for available P, ammonium acetate (NH4OAc) for exchangeable K, Ca, and Mg, DTPA for available Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn, and hot-water extraction for available B. The results obtained from these methods were compared with those determined by the H3A-4 extraction procedure using ICP-OES analysis. The investigated paddy soils were generally neutral to slightly alkaline in reaction, and EC values ranging from 0.18 to 2.74 dS m⁻1 indicated predominantly non-saline to slightly saline conditions. In addition, most of the soils were characterized by heavy-textured properties. Correlation analyses revealed that the H3A-4 extraction method exhibited very strong positive relationships with conventional extraction methods for K and Mg, and strong positive and significant relationships for Ca and B. Moderate positive relationships were observed for Fe and Mn, whereas P showed a weak but statistically significant positive relationship. In contrast, no statistically significant relationship was detected between the methods for Zn and Cu. These results indicate that the H3A-4 multi-extraction method may serve as a practical alternative for the simultaneous determination of plant-available nutrients in paddy soils of the Thrace locality. However, calibration studies supported by plant nutrient uptake and crop yield data are still required before the method can be reliably used for agronomic interpretation and fertilizer recommendations.
