Abstract

This study investigated the chemical properties of vermicomposts produced by mixing hazelnut husk and farmyard manure at different ratios, as well as the effects of these vermicomposts applied at different doses on wheat grain yield, plant biological yield, and soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC). In vermicompost production, mixtures containing 25% hazelnut husk + 75% farmyard manure, 50% hazelnut husk + 50% farmyard manure, and 75% hazelnut husk + 25% farmyard manure were used. The obtained vermicomposts were applied to the soil at rates of 2%, 4%, 6%, and 8% under greenhouse conditions. The results showed that the initial material ratios significantly affected the chemical properties of the vermicomposts. In terms of soil chemical properties, the mixture containing 50% hazelnut husk + 50% farmyard manure was prominent, whereas the best results for plant yield parameters were obtained from the mixture containing 25% hazelnut husk + 75% farmyard manure. All vermicompost applications increased grain yield and biological yield compared to the control treatment. The highest grain yield and plant biological yield were determined as 606.40 and 2457.87 kg da⁻¹, respectively, in the 8% dose of the 25% hazelnut husk + 75% farmyard manure mixture. The applications positively affected microbial biomass carbon values, while showing variable effects on yield parameters. The highest MBC value was determined as 113.190 mg C 100 g⁻¹ in the 6% dose of the 75% hazelnut husk + 25% farmyard manure mixture. Consequently, vermicomposting hazelnut husk with farmyard manure at appropriate ratios has significant potential both for the utilization of a regional agricultural waste and for improving wheat yield and soil biological quality.
