Abstract

Salinity is one of the major abiotic stress factors limiting crop production by adversely affecting plant growth, nutrient uptake, and physiological processes. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a K-Si biocomposite material derived from rice husk, and sheep wool on the growth, nutrient concentration and some physiological parameters of barley grown under salinity stress. The pot experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with treatments consisting of sheep wool (0, 5, and 10 g kg⁻¹) and K-Si biocomposite (0 and 2 g kg⁻¹) combinations. Salinity stress was imposed by applying 500 mg P kg-1 15-15-15 fertilizer and 10 mM NaCl. The results indicated that the combined application of K-Si biocomposite and sheep wool significantly increased dry weight, as well as N, P, K, and Si concentrations in barley plants. In addition, relative water content and leaf water retention capacity were improved. While the K-Si application reduced Na accumulation in plant tissues, an increase in Na concentration was observed with sheep wool treatments. Silicon application also decreased membrane permeability, indicating enhanced stress tolerance. Correlation analysis revealed positive relationships between plant growth, nutrient uptake, and physiological parameters. The combined use of K-Si biocomposite and sheep wool can be considered an effective and sustainable approach to mitigate the adverse effects of salinity stress; however, Na accumulation associated with sheep wool application should be carefully managed through appropriate dose optimization.
