Abstract

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum genus spirochetes, which can present with many different clinical conditions such as skin rash, painless genital ulcer, lymphadenopathy, and mucocutaneous lesions. Cases that can heal spontaneously and remain asymptomatic for years may cause the spread of the disease. Due to the changes in the epidemiology of the disease, syphilis cases are also reported in older ages. Family medicine is one of the most frequently encountered departments with undifferentiated patients among medical disciplines. In this article, we aimed to explain the process of diagnosing and treating syphilis by the family physician in an patient who came to the family health center with complaints of genital wound, swelling and pain in the left groin, and the importance of low prevalence medicine and undifferentiated patient approach in primary care.
