Abstract
Traditional bee houses found in the rural landscapes of the Mediterranean Basin and the Taurus Mountains are structures built to provide sheltered spaces for bees to produce honey. Their forms and structural features are shaped and diversified by the region’s climatic, geographical, and cultural characteristics, and they are primarily constructed with local materials such as stone and wood. These environmentally compatible structures represent an architectural practice that reflects and sustains traditional building knowledge. Bee houses documented to date in Alanya, Gazipaşa, Kumluca, Elmalı, and Korkuteli in Antalya; Arslantaş Plateau in the Bozkır district and the Bolay, Dereköy, and Taşkent districts in Konya; and the Anamur district in Mersin form a rich typology. The typological diversity of bee houses is evident in the differences among structural components such as body shapes, roof coverings, and platform arrangements. This diversity allows bee houses to be studied as a unique building type within the context of rural architectural heritage. This study documents the architectural and structural characteristics of bee houses identified during fieldwork in the Balcılar area of Taşkent district in Konya and evaluates them as distinct examples that enrich the existing typology. It aims to contribute to efforts to document and preserve these bee houses, currently under threat due to the spread of modern beekeeping techniques, as part of broader studies on rural architectural heritage.
