Abstract
This article argues that the objects found in the kurgans of the ancient Turkic period in Southern Siberia, which are stated by archaeologists to be amulets, and the practices shaped around them are examples of the religious continuity between the Early Medieval and the modern Siberian Turks living in the same region today. In particular, attempts were made to identify similarities between kurgan findings such as animal limbs and human teeth, and motifs in oral culture products, ethnographic period records and contemporary examples. For example, in one of the kurgans excavated by L. A. Yevtyukhova and S. V. Kiselev near the village of Kurai in Altai and dated to the VII-IXth centuries, it was revealed that the human and rodent teeth found in the belt bag of the deceased served as amulets, as the analysis revealed that the grave owner suffered from dental disease. Kyzlasov also states that the human teeth in the belt bags found in the ancient Turkic kurgans in Tyva served as amulets for toothache. In the light of this information, according to the kurgan findings, it is understood that the sick or defective tooth was intended to be replaced with its healthy counterpart. Field researches show that today's Siberian Turks also hang a foal tooth around the necks of their children to protect them from toothache. A similar practice was also identified by us in a practice on the basis of baby teeth that the Shamanist Khakas perform years after the ceremony they call tǐs toi, After the analysis of the examples diversified throughout the study, it is concluded that it is possible to speak of a continuity of beliefs in the context of Shamanism between the ancient Turks who lived in today's Khakas, Tyva and Altai lands in the early Middle Ages and the Siberian Turks who continue to live in the same region today.
