Abstract
Greed, defined as an individual's tendency to desire “more” beyond their needs in terms of income, property, and power, is examined in this article at the conceptual, moral, and imagistic levels in classical Turkish poetry. Considering the theme's timeless nature, the study employs cross-period sampling to ensure the validity of its findings. This method aims to reveal the theme's holistic framework within the classical poetic repertoire. Beyond being an individual weakness, greed is examined as an “ideology of insatiability” that damages the moral and social fabric. However, the positive dimension of the theme is also formed by the transcendent quality of the object of desire, elevated in the lover's yearning for union, the dervish's divine grace, and the ruler's passion for conquest. Starting from the observation that “gold dust becomes a veil in the eye,” the “blindness of perception” caused by this ailment is addressed. Through the examination of selected examples from different phases and poetic forms (ghazal, qasida, masnavi), the theme's terminology and its moral-religious context within “evil morality” are primarily revealed. The basic conceptual framework is defined as the opposition between “contentment and greed,” the duality of “wealth and meaning,” and the conflict between “desire and moderation.” Greed is examined on two main axes: thematic treatment and the world of imagery. On the thematic axis, the individual's internal conflicts, the corruptions in social life, its pursuit of moral discipline and balance, and its reflections on love within the context of “the yearning for union” are analyzed, with a specific focus on the “insatiable heart.” In the imaginative context, the allegorical narrative structure that poets employ to concretize this moral malaise is classified into four categories: 1) object images such as “gold” and “chest”; 2) nature images such as “fire” and “sea”; 3) animal imagery such as “dog” and “ant”; 4) bodily imagery such as “insatiable eye” and “stomach”. Based on this deficiency, the study reveals that, within the framework of the “contentment-greed” dichotomy, classical Turkish poetry identifies greed as a cause of individual and social decay and proposes “contentment and humility” as an antidote to this moral deviation.
