Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationships between income inequality, crime, democracy, and economic growth in selected 10 countries in Latin America and South America from 2010 to 2024. The significance of the study lies in uncovering how these relationships have shaped at a regional level and elucidating their implications. The study employs the Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) for analysis. According to the findings, a unit increase in crime rates leads to a 0.423 unit increase in income inequality, while an increase in the democracy index decreases income inequality by 0.244 units. Additionally, a unit increase in the poverty index results in a 0.492 unit increase in income inequality. However, no significant relationship was found between economic growth and income inequality. The study concludes that income inequality can be reduced through strengthening social policies, combating crime, and implementing institutional reforms. These findings are expected to contribute significantly to policy-making processes aimed at reducing inequality in Latin America and South America.
