Abstract

Greenhouse gas emissions are at the center of climate change and environmental sustainability debates and are regarded as one of the main indicators for evaluating the environmental consequences of transformations in the energy structure. In this study, using data from Türkiye for the period 1992-2021, the effects of energy consumption (ET) and renewable energy consumption (YET) on greenhouse gas emissions (SGE) were comparatively analyzed within the framework of the ARDL model and the Bayesian regression approach. In the Bayesian analysis, both non-informative and informative prior distributions were employed; the informative priors were constructed using data from Mexico, Spain, and Poland, which are considered to share similar structural characteristics with Türkiye. The ARDL bounds test results indicate the existence of a long-run cointegration relationship among the variables. According to the ARDL findings, energy consumption increases greenhouse gas emissions in both the short and long run, whereas renewable energy consumption exhibits a reducing effect on emissions in the short run. The results of the Bayesian analysis also support the emission-increasing effect of energy consumption, while indicating that the effect of renewable energy consumption may vary depending on the prior information set used. The findings indicate that fossil fuel-based energy demand in Türkiye increases environmental pressure, while investments in renewable energy serve as an important instrument in limiting emissions.
