Abstract

This study aimed to assess the stress nursing students experience during their education and the strategies they use to cope with stress. The descriptive study population comprised 220 nursing students enrolled at a foundation university in Istanbul. The sample was selected using a stratified sampling method based on class levels, followed by simple random sampling within each class. A total of 121 students volunteered to participate in the study. Data were collected using an Information Form, the Nursing Education Stress Scale, and the Scale of Coping with Stress for Nursing Students. The students’ total mean score on the Nursing Education Stress Scale was 53.42 ± 16.35. For the Scale of Coping with Stress for Nursing Students, the “Optimism” sub-dimension had a mean score of 10.03 ± 2.1, while the “Problem Solving” sub-dimension scored 18.1 ± 4.26. It was found that female students scored significantly higher on the Nursing Education Stress Scale and the “Practise” sub-dimension of the same scale. Additionally, fourth-year students achieved higher scores in the “Problem Solving” sub-dimension of the Scale of Coping with Stress for Nursing Students. In conclusion, the findings revealed that students experienced moderate levels of stress related to nursing education and predominantly employed problem-solving as their primary coping strategy.
