Abstract

The aim of the study was to determine the level of occupational choice capabilities and to determine the relationship between positive career planning attitudes and occupational choice capabilities of the students in the Department of Orthotics and Prosthetics of the Faculty of Health Sciences. An online survey form was used to collect data in the cross-sectional study. Demographic information of the participants was recorded, and they were asked to answer the questions of the Occupational Choice Capability Scale, Career Futures Inventory, and the Questions About Occupational Satisfaction. A total of 132 orthotics and prosthetics undergraduate students between the ages of 18-25 (20.73±1.31 years) participated in the study. It was determined that the capability level of orthotics and prosthetics department students in choosing an occupation was at a medium level, and a moderate, positive significant relationship was found between the occupational choice capabilities and positive career planning attitudes. In addition, there was a difference in the level of occupational choice capabilities according to the willingness to choose the department, goals of obtaining a master’s degree and occupational satisfaction; and in positive career planning attitudes according to willingness to choose the department and their occupational satisfaction. A competent workforce will need to increase significantly to meet the increasing global demand for orthotic prosthetic services. At this point, strengthening the discipline of orthotic and prosthetics plays a key role. The results of the study provide valuable information to improve the positive career planning attitudes and occupational satisfaction of students who choose to receive orthotics and prosthetics education at the undergraduate level, which is a new department in our country, and to strengthen the orthotic and prosthesis discipline.
