Abstract

Nowadays, sociodemographic, environmental, scientific and technological developments in the field of health cause significant changes in the duties, responsibilities and roles of nurses. In this situation, ‘how nursing students put into practice’ rather than ‘what they know’ gains importance, and they should have basic professional competencies including professional knowledge and skills, ethical principles, clinical decision making, critical thinking and problem-solving skills before starting to work as a professional member. This requirement brings to the agenda the design, implementation and evaluation of nursing education in line with the competency-based education model that focuses on providing students with basic professional competencies. However, when the literature is examined, it is seen that there is no standard/systematic approach to the design, implementation and evaluation of competency-based education not only in nursing education but also in the education of all other fields, and there are many differences in both interpretation and implementation. In this article, based on the question ‘How to adapt the Competency-Based Education Model to nursing education?’, the literature on competency-based education in the field of nursing and health was examined, a 9-stage systematic approach was developed on how to design, implement and evaluate competency-based education in nursing education, and the studies on how to structure each stage were explained with examples. In this context, it is thought that the article will guide nurse educators who want to develop a competency-based education program or who want to restructure their existing education in line with competency-based education.
