Abstract

Posture ensures the optimal alignment of the body's parts against gravity. Proper posture is of great importance in maintaining overall health by reducing stress on the muscular and skeletal systems. This study was conducted to examine the effects of school-based physical activity programmed on body mechanics and posture quality. The study included 60 middle school students (age: 13.5 years; height: 157 cm; weight: 58 kg) from Antalya province, comprising 30 girls and 30 boys. The students' posture status was assessed using the New York Posture Rating Scale (NYPR). The students were given posture-correcting exercises under the supervision of a physical education teacher for six weeks. Paired Sample Tests were used for the pre- and post-test analysis of students' NYPR scores, while Independent Sample Tests were used for the analysis of independent groups. After six weeks of regular exercise, a statistically significant improvement was observed in the students' NYPR posture scores (p<0.001). In particular, significant improvements were observed in the correction of abnormalities in the position of the students' head, shoulders, hips, back, and neck (p<0.05). However, changes in some areas (e.g., arch of the foot, shoulder protraction) did not reach a statistically significant level (p>0.05). The results indicate that school-based regular exercise is an effective method for improving the posture of middle school students.
