Abstract

This study investigated the effects of different small-sided games (SSGs) on female soccer players' perceived enjoyment responses and technical performance. Twenty female soccer players playing for a team competing in the Turkish Female Super League participated in this study. Participants participated in three game sessions (four bouts of 3, 5, and 7-a-side SSGs with two minutes of rest between bouts at 48-hour intervals) for performance evaluation. Technical skills were continuously monitored and recorded during all SSGs. The exercise enjoyment scale (EES) was also determined at the end of the last bout of each SSGs. A Linear Mixed Model was used to compare enjoyment and technical responses among the games. The results showed that 7v7 induced higher successful pass, unsuccessful pass, and lost ball responses (p ≤ 0.05). Conversely, the 3v3 showed significantly higher successful shots, unsuccessful shot, and goal (p ≤ 0.05). Additionally, all SSGs games had no significant difference in interception action and enjoyment responses (p > 0.05). The results of this study suggest that different SSGs significantly affected the technical performance of female soccer players (7v7 improved passing accuracy and 3v3 improved shooting efficiency) but did not make a significant difference in game enjoyment. According to these results, coaches can increase the effectiveness and participation of female soccer players in training sessions by adapting to SSGs.
