Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the development and trends of academic studies on carbon accounting, which plays an active role in addressing the climate crisis, between 2000 and 2024 in the perspective of various parameters using Scopus, a scientific database of well-known publications. As one of the comprehensive bibliometric analyses conducted to better understand the scientific richness and interdisciplinary relationships in the field of carbon accounting, this study is expected to make a significant contribution to the literature. In line with this purpose and scope, bibliometric analysis of the articles on “carbon accounting” in the Scopus database was carried out by visual mapping method using VOSviewer (1.6.19) software package. When the keyword “carbon accounting” was searched in the database, a total of 962 scientific studies were found between 2000 and 2024. The analysis showed that the interest in carbon accounting is increasing day by day and the volume of information collected to date has reached a large volume. It was found that the number of studies on this subject was very few in 2000 and 155 in 2024, the country with the most publications was the USA, the language of publication was English and the journal was “Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization”. Another important result obtained in the study is that most of the studies on this subject are conducted in the field of Environmental Sciences. The study is envisaged to be a reference for future academic research on carbon accounting and similar topics.
