Abstract
Turkiye is a country that is quite diverse and rich in terms of minerals. It is known that some of the mines in the country have a significant place worldwide. Gumushane Province, located in the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkiye, also has a rich variety in terms of minerals. In fact, this diversity in Gumushane became important when the first civilizations dominated the region, and in addition to the mines in the city, the fact that the city is located on the Silk Road route increased the importance of this region even more. Undoubtedly, this importance continued with the Ottoman Empire’s conquest of Trabzon and the annexation of the region to its territory. During this period, mining activities in the city began to increase and the work carried out in this direction contributed financially to the country. In this respect, the Ottoman Empire gave great importance to Gumushane, which had a lively commercial vibrant feature due to the presence of silver and gold mines and other mines in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Thus, the mines, which had their golden age in the 17th century, continued their activities until the end of the 18th century. After this century, the production in the mines decreased over time and the workers working in the mining enterprises in the region began to leave the mines. By the middle of the 19th century, there was a great dissolution in the operation of mines. This study aims to reveal the importance of the mines that direct the economy of the city in terms of the city by addressing the mining activities of Gümüşhane City from the historical ages, the Ottoman Period and the Republic to the present day. In the study, studies conducted on the area and archive documents were utilized.
