Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the solutions of third grade students to 4 different types of problems under the title of traditional and skill-based problems: "containing excess information, containing incomplete information, containing contradictory information and having more than one solution". This research is a cross-sectional survey model. 27 third grade students participated in this research. The data of the research were collected in the second semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of open-ended mathematical problems. The questionnaire used in the research consists of 2 different sections and a total of 8 open-ended problems, 4 in each section. Data collection was carried out with an interval of 2 weeks. First, the students were given a narrative that included traditional problems, and then 2 weeks later, skill-based problems were included. The findings of the study did not change the students' problem solving ways with traditional and skill-based problems, while the problems in the sub-category changed the students' solution ways. In solving problems with incomplete information, students could not make correct and sufficient explanations in skill-based problems compared to traditional problems. This situation, which students revealed when they were in the 3rd grade in solving both traditional and skill-based problems, shows that they are open to development for mathematical literacy.
