Abstract

Students with special education needs experience the greatest difficulty with reading. Thus, the present study aimed to determine the readability of the texts in the Adapted Activities for Special Students Social Studies Supplementary Textbook (Volumes 1, 2, and 3), assess whether these books were adequate for the students' level, and evaluate consistency with the readability formulas developed for the Turkish language. The present study is descriptive. The study investigated the readability of the Adapted Activities for Special Students Social Studies Supplementary Textbook. The texts were analyzed using the Ateşman and Çetinkaya readability formulas. The Sönmez readability formula was also applied to individuals with mild intellectual disabilities to identify the words in the texts that were not recognized and to conduct knowledge tests. In the study, it was determined that the readability levels of the texts were at medium difficulty according to the Ateşman formula. According to the Çetinkaya formula, Volume 1 and Volume 3 were at the educational reading level, while Volume 2 was at the inadequate reading level. According to the Sönmez formula, the texts were comprehensible, but the students did not respond to them at the expected level.
