Abstract

The agricultural sector faces significant challenges in achieving sustainable production and increasing productivity due to the growing global population and environmental factors. The increasing population, along with plant diseases and yield losses, complicates management efforts. If plant diseases are not detected in a timely manner, they can spread rapidly, leading to substantial losses. Early detection, intervention, and prevention of environmental damage are crucial, as they reduce treatment costs. Traditional methods are time-consuming and inefficient, whereas artificial intelligence and deep learning-based algorithms offer faster and more accurate detection capabilities. Interventions made at the right time improve productivity and support sustainable agriculture. This paper examines the application of the YOLOv8 algorithm in detecting tomato fruit diseases and its potential contribution to sustainability in agriculture. YOLOv8 is a model capable of detecting diseases, pests, and stress symptoms quickly and accurately. Two studies were conducted in this paper, and the causes of the shortcomings in the first study were identified, leading to significant improvements in the second study that enhanced the model’s performance. The precision reached 0.93, recall was 0.90, and the F1-score achieved high levels. This success was achieved by limiting the number of epochs to 50 during training, optimizing data augmentations, and including the ripeness stages of tomatoes in the training data. In conclusion, with the improvements made, YOLOv8 has become a reliable tool for disease detection and early intervention in the agricultural sector. These enhancements significantly contribute to reducing yield losses and offer substantial benefits to agricultural production.
