Abstract
The increasing production of agricultural waste in recent years, while creating significant environmental and economic challenges, also presents a significant opportunity as a renewable resource for sustainable material development. This study aimed to systematically examine recent developments in the use of agricultural waste and by-products as reinforcement and filler materials in biocomposite production. The effects of waste type, fiber extraction, surface treatment methods, matrix selection, and processing techniques on the performance of composite materials were reviewed using the studies published in peer-reviewed journals between 2015 and 2025. The results show that lignocellulosic residues such as rice husk, wheat straw, sugarcane pulp, coconut fiber, and hazelnut shell, when properly processed, significantly increase the stiffness and the strength of polymeric and cemented composites. In particular, it was noted that mechanical tests such as tensile, flexural, and compressive are necessary to characterize the anisotropic behavior and fracture mechanisms of biocomposites and to ensure process consistency. Thermal and morphological analyses revealed that agricultural waste fillers can function as nucleating agents by improving crystallinity and interfacial adhesion at low concentrations. Despite these advantages, challenges related to raw material variability, moisture sensitivity, and scalability remain. The technical feasibility and sustainability potential of biocomposites derived from agricultural wastes were also evaluated. This study might serve as a guide for future research aimed at improving the durability, standardization, structural and industrial applicability of biocomposite materials.
