Abstract

This study examines the environmental, economic and social dimensions of waste management by reviewing examples of successful sustainable waste management practices from around the world and from Turkey. Beyond environmental issues, waste management is considered a policy area that requires economic opportunities and social participation. The practices examined emphasise the importance of circular economy and recycling strategies. Cities such as the United States of America (Texas-Houston), Denmark (Copenhagen), Australia (Sydney), Sweden (Gothenburg), South Korea (Seoul), Italy (Milan) as well as Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Eskişehir-Tepebaşı Municipality, Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, Çanakkale Municipality, Lüleburgaz Municipality and Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality from Turkey were taken as examples. It was emphasised that waste is not only a resource to be disposed of, but also a resource to create economic value. Sustainable waste management requires cooperation between citizens, local authorities, the private sector, and public institutions. In order to implement these processes effectively, the capacity of local governments should be strengthened, the industrial sector should be involved in waste management, and social participation should be increased. In conclusion, sustainable waste management is crucial for economic development and social welfare, as well as for environmental sustainability.
