Abstract

Beekeeping is a critical economic activity for rural communities with limited income sources, and its sustainable and planned management is essential. Ardahan, as one of the main genetic centers of the Caucasian honeybee in Turkey, faces short production seasons and harsh geographical conditions that constrain beekeeping activities; therefore, the rational and efficient use of resources is crucial. In this context, this study aimed to identify the most suitable areas for beekeeping in Ardahan. The relative importance of factors affecting site selection was evaluated through expert surveys using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) pairwise comparison method. The survey data were supported by model reliability, consistency ratio, and sensitivity analyses, and the calculated weights were integrated into a GIS environment to produce suitability maps. The analyses revealed 86.6% spatial overlap between the model-identified areas and existing beekeeping locations, indicating that a large portion of the province is highly suitable for apiculture. These findings demonstrate that the GIS–AHP hybrid approach provides a reliable framework for spatial planning of beekeeping in Ardahan and can inform similar assessments in regions with comparable environmental conditions.
