Abstract

AASHTO-93 method, which is a regression-based empirical method, is used in the flexible pavement design of Turkish highways. The structural number (SN), calculated depending on the strength and thickness of the layers forming the pavement, is one of the basic parameters used in the calculation of road life in the AASHTO method. In a design where the road class and subgrade bearing capacity do not change, the standard axle load number that the road can carry until it deteriorates does not change unless the SN value changes. In this study, the thicknesses of the layers forming a traditional flexible pavement were changed in 4 different values as 0.5-1.0-1.5 and 2.0 cm, so that the SN value does not change. The new sections, which did not change the road life according to the AASHTO method, were analyzed with mechanistic-empirical methods and the change rates in road life values were investigated. Among the different sections studied, the critical changes that provide an increase in the fatigue-related pavement life (Nf) were obtained by increasing the thickness of the bituminous hot mix asphalt (HMA) layers and decreasing the thickness of the plant-mix base (PMB) layer. The thickness changes within the bituminous layers did not change the road life values significantly. In the calculation of the pavement life (Nr) due to the rutting, Nr values increased in the sections where the HMA layer thicknesses decreased and the resulting SN difference was balanced with the increase in PMB thickness.
