Abstract

The construction sector, a significant part of the architectural discipline and a major contributor to carbon emissions, is closely intertwined with the human environment. Therefore, the concept of "Ecological Architecture" is being explored. Ecological architecture aims to meet the aesthetic and comfort needs of people while conserving natural resources. Among these goals, the use of ecological materials in designs is paramount. Industrial hemp (Cannabis Sativa L.) is currently being tested as an ecological material. Industrial hemp is being used in concrete, wool, and wood production in various parts of the world within the construction sector. This study aims to examine industrial hemp as an ecological material through the example of "Can Monges." Can Monges is a restoration project in Mallorca, Spain, where a house was constructed using building materials made from hemp and incorporating recycling designs. The study outlines the uses of hemp, determines its ecological potential, and evaluates it using a SWOT analysis. Based on the data obtained from the Can Monges project, the aim was to demonstrate that industrial hemp is an ecological material with effective heat and moisture insulation, high ventilation, natural pest control, and low carbon emissions, and that its applicability in architecture is possible.
