Abstract

This study was conducted on the outcropping of the Kırkgeçit Formation in Alatarla village, located approximately 21 km northwest of Elazığ city center. In thin sections prepared from samples taken along two measured stratigraphic sections named Alatarla 1 and Alatarla 2 determined larger benthic foraminifera such as Sphaerogypsina globulus, Asterigerina rotula, Gyroidinella magna, Halkyardia minima, Fabiania cassis, Chapmanina gassinensis, Silvestrella tetraedra, Nummulites sp., Assilina sp., Heterostegina sp., Operculina sp., Alveolina sp., Gypsina sp., and orthophragminid. Based on the larger benthic foraminifera identified, the unit has been dated to late Bartonian-early Priabonian. Stable isotope analyses (δ13C and δ18O) were performed on 13 benthic foraminifera and 2 rock samples. According to these analysis results, δ13C values ranged from 0,35 to 2,60, while δ18O values ranged from -1,79 to -3,76. Based on δ18O values, the paleotemperature ranges between 18-27 °C, and the average temperature is calculated as 21,69°C. The decrease in δ18O values indicates that the environment is becoming shallower and the paleotemperature is increasing. Low 13C values indicate high nutrient uptake. When stable isotope values in rock samples and loose samples were compared, the presence of diagenesis effects was determined in the rock samples; therefore, these values were not taken into account in the calculations. Based on the larger benthic foraminifera content and stable isotope analysis findings, it has been assessed that the unit was deposited in a shallow and warm environment.
