Abstract

In this study, A-weighted equivalent continuous sound level (LAeq) measurements were performed at 34 outdoor locations on the Fırat University campus over a 14-day period during the morning (07:00–10:00), noon (12:00–15:00) and evening (17:00–20:00) intervals. Results were compared against the Noise Evaluation and Management Regulation (65 dBA) of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change of the Republic of Türkiye (CSB) and the World Health Organization’s Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region (≤ 55 dBA low risk; 55–65 dBA moderate risk; ≥ 65 dBA high risk). Mean LAeq values were 68.2 ± 5.1 dBA in the morning, 71.4 ± 6.3 dBA at noon, and 69.7 ± 5.6 dBA in the evening, with one-way ANOVA revealing significant differences between periods (p < 0.001). High-risk points (≥ 65 dBA) comprised 24.2% in the morning, 36.4% at noon, and 15.2% in the evening, while CSB compliance rates were 75.8%, 63.6%, and 84.8%, respectively. IDW interpolation maps indicated elevated noise intensity in northwestern corridors during morning and noon periods, with reduced risk levels around social areas in the evening. These findings underscore the necessity for time- and space-specific noise management strategies in campus open areas that align with both CSB and WHO standards.
