Abstract

Life satisfaction is affected by various factors as it is an overall evaluation of individual’s satisfaction in life. Migra- tion process is one of these variables. This study aims at examining the impact of ethnic and religious belonging levels, perceived level of discrimination, acculturation strategies and demographic characteristics of women who moved from Turkey to the UK on their life satisfaction levels by using the concepts of life satisfaction, social identity and acculturation. 125 female London residents who migrated from Turkey and aged 21 to 55 have participated in the study. It is observed that life satisfaction scores of participants were high and separation strategy was preferred in acculturation process. The relationship between participants life satisfaction levels and various demographic char- acteristics (age, education, ethnic group, marital status, income, type of place of residence in Turkey, and duration of stay in the UK), and the inventories administered in the study was examined by carrying out three hierarchical regression models. It was found that life satisfaction levels of immigrant women was significantly influenced by ethnic group, marital status, income, type of place of residence in Turkey, religious identity, and integration strategy. The most important variables with positive impact on life satisfaction were integration strategy, religious identity and metropolitan background in Turkey prior to immigration. In addition, as the income level decreased, the level of life satisfaction declined. This study is the first ever study of life satisfaction among the Turkish-origin immigrant women who are resident in the UK.
