Abstract

Agency plays a critical role in how teachers evaluate their expertise in their professional development and how they evaluate themselves as members of the professional community. This study aimed to examine the predictive role of teacher self-efficacy, collective teacher efficacy, job satisfaction, and readiness for change on teacher agency. This study was designed in a predictive correlation design. The sample consisted of 501 primary teachers working in different provinces of Türkiye and selected via convenience sampling. The data were analyzed through multiple linear regression analysis. The results revealed that the teachers were very high in teacher self-efficacy and readiness for change, high in teacher agency and collective teacher efficacy and moderate in job satisfaction. The regression analysis showed that teacher self-efficacy, collective teacher efficacy, job satisfaction, and readiness for change were statistically significant predictors of teacher agency and together explain approximately 55% of the variation in teacher agency. In addition, while teacher self-efficacy has a macro-level effect on teacher agency, other variables have a micro-level effect. In conclusion, since teacher agency is not only a process based on personal factors but also influenced by environmental factors, it should be explained with holistic models that consider personal and environmental-social factors together to fully understand and increase teacher agency.
