Abstract

Institutionalization is a process that enables businesses to operate within a framework of systems, rules, standards, and procedures independent of individuals, thereby ensuring the sustainability of the business. In this process, internal communication, corporate communication, and public relations activities are considered key indicators of institutionalization. In this study, a phenomenological approach was employed as a qualitative research method to examine the relationship between institutionalization and communication. Data in the study were collected using in-depth interview techniques. Data were collected through semi-structured, in-depth interviews conducted with 10 corporate communication specialists working in small and medium-sized family-owned businesses that have been operating in Turkey for at least two generations. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The research findings indicate that businesses primarily associate the concept of institutionalization with concepts such as systematization, order, standardization, professionalization, and sustainability. Participants view institutionalization not merely as a change in organizational structure but also as a process of building trust, developing brand image, and strengthening customer relationships. The findings also reveal that communication plays a significant role in the institutionalization process, both in regulating internal organizational relationships and in managing relationships with the external environment. Internal communication serves an important function in ensuring coordination among employees, communicating organizational culture, reducing conflicts, and organizing business processes. Corporate communication activities, on the other hand, contribute to strengthening institutionalization elements such as building customer trust, developing corporate image, and promoting transparency and accountability. The research findings indicate that the institutionalization process is not limited solely to organizational structure and management processes; communication processes are one of the fundamental components of this process. It is observed that as organizations undergo institutionalization, they adopt a more planned, transparent, and trust-oriented structure; meanwhile, effective communication processes play a decisive role in this transformation, both internally and externally. In this context, this study aims to contribute to the literature by elucidating the relationship between institutionalization and organizational communication through empirical investigation.
