Abstract

Financial integration is one of the most important consequences of globalization. It is impossible to speak of financial decoupling in the global world. It is impossible for a country to protect itself from regional and global crises. Shocks that occur in one country or region spread to other countries very quickly. Financial markets are among the markets most quickly affected by external shocks. Fluctuations in financial markets cause a deterioration in expectations, triggering macroeconomic instability trends. Investigating the effects of fluctuations in financial markets and examining the interaction between variables affecting financial markets will provide a data source for the implementation of stabilization policies. The main objective of this study is to examine the interaction among the BIST 100, BIST Participation 100, gold, and the USD/TRY exchange rate series in Türkiye using weekly data covering the period from November 28, 2021 to April 19, 2026. To this end, the interactions among the variables are investigated using the conventional Granger and Fourier Granger causality tests together with the Diebold–Yılmaz spillover analysis. The causality results reveal a bidirectional causal relationship between the BIST 100 and the exchange rate series, while unidirectional causal relationships are identified from the BIST 100 and BIST Participation 100 series to the gold series and from the BIST Participation 100 series to the exchange rate series. The Diebold–Yılmaz spillover analysis further indicates that the BIST 100 and BIST Participation 100 series play a dominant role in the shock transmission process within the Turkish financial markets. These findings are expected to contribute to investors' portfolio management and risk assessment processes, while also providing useful implications for policymakers in the formulation of financial market regulations and policies.
