Abstract

Sustainable employment and environmental goals cannot be achieved simultaneously, according to the Environmental Phillips Curve (EPC) hypothesis. EPC analyses can therefore shed light on governments’ efforts to find solutions in two critical areas. This paper tests the validity of the EPC in the United States over the period 1965–2024, using total and gender-disaggregated unemployment rates. With this motivation, the paper empirically investigates the effects of total unemployment rate (UR), female unemployment rate (FUR), male unemployment rate (MUR), gross domestic product (GDP) and primary energy consumption (PEC) on the ecological footprint (EF) using a vector autoregression (VAR) model and wavelet coherence analysis. The results of the impulse-response function strongly support the EPC hypothesis with respect to the UR and MUR variables, while they also indicate the existence of a similar relationship for the FUR variable over shorter periods. Conversely, the positive impact of the GDP and PEC variables on EF indicates that economic growth and energy consumption lead to increased environmental degradation. The WCA findings largely support the VAR model. These results reveal that increases in employment, economic expansion, and energy use carry potential risks from the perspective of sustainable environmental policies. Hence, it is recommended that policymakers reduce the necessity of making a difficult trade-off between unemployment and environmental degradation by promoting renewable energy sources and environmentally friendly technologies, particularly in laborintensive sectors.
