Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Vitamin deficiencies are one of the risk factors for recurrent aphtous stomatitis. Vitamin deficiencies are mostly caused by nutritional deficiencies. This study aimed to examine the nutritional status and vitamin levels in children followed up due to recurrent aphtous stomatitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective observational study included 66 patients diagnosed with recurrent aphtous stomatitis and 66 healthy children. Demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory findings were examined from electronic file records. Nutritional status was classified as underweight, obese and according to body mass index. Vitamin B12, vitamin D, ferritin and iron levels were determined from biochemical tests recorded in the electronic information system; hemoglobin level was determined from complete blood count. RESULTS: 55% of the patient group was male; mean age was 8.2±4.8 (2-18) years. There was no significant difference with the control group in terms of mean age and gender distribution (p=0.695). When nutritional status was examined, no significant difference was found between the frequency of malnutrition and obesity between the patient group and the control group (p=0.375). The mean vitamin D level was 21.3±11.0 ng/mL in the patient group and 25.3±10.9 ng/ml in the control group. It was found to be significantly lower in the patient group (p=0.032). The frequency of vitamin D deficiency was found to be significantly higher with 46.3% compared to the control group (p:0.023). The median value of vitamin B12 was 411.5 (171-950)411.5±164 pg/mL in the patient group and 454 (190-980) pg/mL in the control group and there was no significant difference (p=0.137). The frequency of vitamin B12 deficiency was 28.4% in the patient group and 15.2% in the control group and there was no significant difference (p=0.051). In the patient group, mean hemoglobin was 12.9±2.0 g/dL, iron was 59.8±24.1 ug/dL, ferritin was 38.4±22.1 μg/L. In the control group, mean hemoglobin was 13.2±1.0 g/dL, iron was 66.1±27.2 ug/dL, ferritin was 42.3±20.2 μg/L. No significant difference was found between the groups for mean values of hemoglobin, iron, and ferritin (p=0.92, p=0.541, p=0.94 7, respectively). The frequency of anemia was found to be 17.9% in the patient group, significantly higher than in the control group (p=0.36). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the frequency of anemia and vitamin D deficiency was found to be significantly higher in children with recurrent mouth ulcers than in healthy children. Because vitamin deficiencies are associated with recurrent mouth sores, complete blood count and vitamin level screening may be recommended in children presenting with this complaint.

BULGULAR: Hasta grubunun %55’i erkekti; yaş ortalaması 8,2±4,8 (2-18) yıldı.
