Abstract

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the rates of lower urinary tract symptoms and constipation in patients with primary enuresis (PE). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study was conducted between February 1st and August 1st, 2018 using a questionnaire administered to children aged 5-15 years with newly diagnosed PE at the Pediatric Nephrology and Child Health and Diseases outpatient clinics of a tertiary research hospital. RESULTS: A total of 208 children, 47.1% of whom were female, were included in the study. The mean age at diagnosis was 8.9±2.5 years. A family history of PE was present in 75.9% of patients, and 24% had a history of PE in more than one family member. In terms of frequency, 74.4% experienced urinary incontinence every night. 55.8% of patients were diagnosed with non-monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis (NMNE). All lower urinary tract symptoms were more common in girls (p<0.05). 31.3% of patients experienced daytime urinary incontinence. Constipation was detected in 21.1% of children based on their own statements and was identified in 25% according to the Rome-4 criteria. A history of urinary tract infection was present in 24% of participants and was more common in girls than in boys (p=0.006). CONCLUSIONS: Lower urinary tract symptoms and constipation may frequently accompany PE. Identifying underlying lower urinary tract symptoms, constipation, and daytime wetting is important for establishing an accurate diagnosis and developing appropriate treatment strategies for PE.

Özet

AMAÇ: Primer enürezis (PE) tanısı alan çocuklarda alt üriner sistem semptomları ve kabızlık oranlarını araştırmak amaçlanmıştır. GEREÇ VE YÖNTEM: Bu prospektif kesitsel çalışma, 1 Şubat-1 Ağustos 2018 tarihleri arasında üçüncü basamak bir eğitim araştırma hastanesinin Çocuk Nefroloji ve Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları polikliniklerinde yeni tanı almış PE’li 5-15 yaş çocuklara anket çalışması yapılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. BULGULAR: Çalışmaya %47,1’i kız olmak üzere 208 çocuk dahil edildi. Ortalama tanı yaşı 8,9±2,5’ti. Hastaların %75,9’unda PE yönünden aile öyküsü vardı ve %24’ünde birden fazla aile üyesinde PE öyküsü mevcuttu. Sıklığı açısından bakıldığında %74,4’ünde her gece idrar kaçırma olduğu görüldü. Hastaların %55,8’i monosemptomatik olmayan enürezis tanısı aldı (NMNE).
